Swedish

The most common and well-known type of massage, a Swedish massage is a great place to start for your first massage. As a therapeutic massage, a Swedish massage is performed by a trained and licensed massage therapist. It can be a slow and gentle massage or a more vigorous one, depending on your preferences. The massage is used to release tension, break up muscle knots / adhered tissues, and promote relaxation! It can also reduce anxiety and improve blood circulation.

Deep Tissue

Very similar to a Swedish massage in nature, a deep tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension. The massage therapist will work into the deepest layers, including the tendons and fascia, focusing on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. From chronic back pain to tight leg muscles, deep tissue massages can provide serious relief for those with chronic pain.

Shiatsu

Primarily developed in Japan and boasting roots in traditional Chinese medicine, the name means “finger pressure,” which sums up the type of massage. A therapist will apply pressure to specific points on the body that are thought to be connected to “meridians,” allowing energy to flow through the body. Though scientist have yet to prove if or how this type of massage benefits individuals, it is believed that it can help stimulate circulation, soothe pain, and reduce stress. It can also calm the nervous system according to some.

Reflexology

Similar to shiatsu, reflexology involves the application of pressure to specific points on the hands, feet, and ears. Reflexologists focus on these areas because they believe that they correspond to specific body organs and body systems, creating a beneficial effect on the person’s health. The goal is to help relieve tension, improve nerve and blood supply, and normalize body functions.
